Balance
One of our sons graduated from high school this past June. Unlike many parents, I did not get misty and sad that he was leaving the nest. I’ve been counting the months, days, and hours for quite some time now; not because he’s difficult -- just because he is ready for college and I am ready for him to take on the next stage of life. (Can I also say I am tired of waiting up for him to ensure he does not break curfew?)
I decided to get all insightful and write him a “Life Lessons” note that he could deeply savor as he went forward into the world of college.
I tried to offer some profound advice as well as some tongue-in-cheek nuggets about how to make life productive yet enjoyable. I have no idea if he found it helpful or wise. All I got was a “Thanks, mom” along with a quick squeeze around the shoulders as he ran to another graduation party.
I reminded myself that someday he would “get it” and I decided to share this same learning with some others who might actually give it the time of day. (That would be you all, of course.) So, check out this great piece of wisdom I borrowed from a website called Lifeletics (http://www.lifeletics.com).
Life Lesson: Balance
Successful, balanced, actions are a blend of aggression and caution. He who is over-aggressive falls out of balance by trying too hard, while he who is too cautious loses balance through laziness and an unwillingness to work hard. Balance brings us through the highs and lows of life with an even keel, enabling us to manage the pains of defeat as well as the joys of victory!
How cool is that little nugget! Again, I have no idea if the young buck heading to college will read, use, or remember this life lesson in the future. So, I invite you to apply it to your life. To start, read how OSP EXPO’s co-keynote speaker Jeff Carr, Chief Technology Officer, Cincinnati Bell Telephone, takes a similar approach to his world. (Interview starts on page 18.)
And speaking of balance (Have you gotten my theme yet?), this year’s OSP EXPO brings you a balance of two gifted leaders from IOCs. During their co-keynote presentations, they will share interesting initiatives they’ve spearheaded to help their companies balance out their telecom offerings.
Finally, remember to add some balance in your life and register today for OSP EXPO® 2011. Your time on site at this powerful (and balanced) educational event may help you remain on an even keel while you look to grow professionally in our not-so-balanced telecom space.
What is your experience with this? Tell your fellow readers now!
