Semiannual IPTV Global Forecast Shows Robust Growth to 2015 Using Multiscreen Services
MRG, Inc. reports that the global IPTV market will grow to US$49 billion in service revenues and 113 million subscribers in 2015 -- as multiscreen video usage drives wireless services to new highs. Systems revenue for the 7 key CapEx IPTV products analyzed will grow to US$4.8 billion in 2015, with STBs (set-top boxes) representing about 60%.

Triple Play Subscriptions to Quadruple
More than a quarter of the world’s TV households will subscribe to Triple Play services (3P - TV, broadband and telephony) by 2016, according to Digital TV Research. The Triple-Play Forecasts report (covering 73 countries) estimates that this is up from only 7.1% penetration at end-2010. Report author Simon Murray said: “The 2016 3P penetration doesn’t sound too impressive until you realize that this represents 387 million homes, up from 96 million at end-2010.”

U.S. Mobile Map Audience Grows 39 Percent in Past Year as Fixed-Internet Map Audience Softens Slightly
comScore, Inc. released results of a U.S. study of mobile map usage. The study found that 48 million mobile users accessed maps on their mobile device during the 3-month-average period ending May 2011, an increase of 39 percent from the previous year, driven in large part by the increase in smartphone adoption.

Penetration of smartphones stands at more than 40 percent in Western Europe and 38 percent in the U.S. as consumers snap up the latest models and download apps. Pacific Fibre Ramps Up Trans-Pacific Subsea Cable System Work
Pacific Fibre and TE SubCom, a TE Connectivity Ltd. Company, announced the signing of a supply contract for the Pacific Fibre undersea cable system. The exceptionally long system will stretch 12,750km and boast a significantly higher cross sectional capacity than any other trans-Pacific cable. Upon completion, the system will be the highest-capacity-per-fiber-pair system ever built. The cables will each have 2 fiber pairs, with an ultimate cable design capacity of 12.8 Tbps.
